Landsman Announces $10M Federal Grant for City of Cincinnati Landslide Mitigation

Cincinnati, OH – Today, Congressman Greg Landsman (OH-01) announced that $10 million in federal funding has been awarded to the City of Cincinnati for landslide mitigation efforts.

The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) has awarded the City of Cincinnati $10,079,824 to provide long-term construction remedies at 10 locations along major routes throughout the city that are prone to landslides, hillside slippage, and retaining wall failures. The funding will be used for a series of slope stabilization and retaining wall failure mitigation projects that will reduce travel safety hazards, enhancing resiliency, and improve deteriorating roadway infrastructure.

The federal grant is being awarded through DOT’s highly competitive Promoting Resilient Operations for Transformative, Efficient, and Cost-Saving Transportation (PROTECT) grant program – a federal initiative funded by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act that is focused on ensuring surface transportation resilience to natural hazards such as extreme weather events.

In October 2023, Congressman Landsman wrote to U.S. Department of Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg in support of the City of Cincinnati’s application for PROTECT grant program funding.

Congressman Landsman:

“As we deal with increasingly volatile weather, landslides have impacted some of the city’s busiest roads. This federal funding will make it safer for folks to get to and from work and school, and we’ll keep working to bring infrastructure dollars back home.”

Mayor Aftab Pureval

“Winning the PROTECT grant is a major win for environmental justice, stability, and climate resiliency in Cincinnati. This grant provides a unique and incredible opportunity for us to mitigate threats in our most vulnerable hillside areas, rather than having to respond to catastrophic landslides after they happen. We are extremely grateful to have representatives in Congressman Landsman and Senator Brown, who understand, advocate for, and deliver results for our community’s major challenges.”
