Landsman on Protests in Iran

Cincinnati, OH – Today, Congressman Greg Landsman (D-OH-01) released the following statement on the protests happening in Iran:

For over two weeks, we have watched the people of Iran push back against the Islamic Republic. This regime has, for almost 50 years, brutalized Iranians and brought havoc to the region.

Reports of a violent crackdown are emerging, despite the fact the regime has cut off internet to prevent the people from communicating with each other and the outside world. The violence against the Iranian people peacefully protesting is disgusting and wrong.

Importantly, we’re witnessing the tremendous courage of the Iranian people. Their message is simple: it’s time for change. They want to reclaim their country and pursue the kind of self-determination that every person on earth has the right to.

We don’t know what comes next for Iran, but the future should be left to the people, not the theocratic dictators who have hurt and undermined their own people for power.

I strongly support the Iranian people in their fight for freedom. I am in awe of their passion, courage, and belief in a better future for themselves and their country. I urge the Administration to support the Iranian people by facilitating communications and maintaining pressure on the regime.
