Landsman Statement on Vote Against Department of Homeland Security Bill
Cincinnati, OH – Today, Congressman Greg Landsman (D-OH-01) released the following statement after voting against a U.S. Department of Homeland Security funding bill:
Trump’s approach to ICE has become a legitimate public safety threat to Americans.
I’m a public safety guy and believe that people have two basic expectations for their leaders: focus on the economy and keep us safe.
In Minneapolis, ICE has incited chaos. They murdered Renee Good, they tear gassed an infant, and they shut down schools.
The situation is dangerous and deadly. And because the Administration is doubling down on this chaos, it’s going to get more dangerous and deadly.
ICE needs to withdraw from Minneapolis immediately and the Administration must pursue comprehensive fixes to keep Americans safe.
One key fix is to work with local law enforcement and follow their lead. These are their towns and they should be in charge. That will keep Americans safe.
We offered an amendment to require ICE to notify and work with local law enforcement. There should be a clear chain of command and local control. Unfortunately, this fix was rejected.
I’m a steadfast believer in the need to invest in border security as well as really smart, humane immigration enforcement. This hasn’t and won’t change.
What has changed is how this Administration is using ICE to create chaos in American cities and towns.
It’s despicable and making Americans less safe.
