Landsman Working to Force Vote on Social Security Fairness Act
Cincinnati, OH – Today, Congressman Greg Landsman (OH-01) released the following statement after signing a discharge petition to bring the Social Security Fairness Act up for a vote in the House.
Today, Congressman Landsman signed a discharge petition to force a vote on H.R.82 – the Social Security Fairness Act. A discharge petition is a legislative mechanism in the House of Representatives that allows members to bring a bill to the House floor for a vote, even if the measure is not supported by the majority party leadership. To do this, the petition must be signed by at least 218 members, representing a majority of the chamber.
The Social Security Fairness Act is commonsense, bipartisan legislation that has been cosponsored by nearly 326 members of the House and which would repeal two Social Security provisions – the Windfall Elimination Provision and the Government Pension Offset – which unfairly penalizes public employees who paid into public retirement pensions but who also worked in the private sector and paid into Social Security.
The Social Security Fairness Act would ensure that the nearly two million public retirees whose Social Security benefits are currently reduced by these two provisions would receive the full Social Security benefits they are owed.
Congressman Landsman has been tasked by the sponsor of the Social Security Fairness Act – Rep. Abigail Spanberger – to serve as a Whip on the discharge petition effort – helping to secure signatures on petitions from Republican and Democratic members of Congress.
Congressman Landsman:
“I just signed the discharge petition to the bipartisan Social Security Fairness Act. We’re helping lead the whip effort, or working with the cosponsors to get 215 additional members to sign. Passing this will help millions of retired police officers, firefighters, and teachers get the benefits they earned.”
