Cincinnati, OH – Today, Congressman Greg Landsman (D-OH-01) announced that the discharge petition led by Congresswoman Abigail Spanberger (D-VA-07) and Congressman Garret Graves (R-LA-06) for the bipartisan Social Security Fairness Act has reached 218 signatures, enough to force a vote in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Congressman Landsman played a leading role in the discharge petition effort and was tasked by Rep. Abigail Spanberger, the sponsor of the Social Security Fairness Act, to serve as a Whip—working to secure signatures from both Republican and Democratic members of Congress.

On Thursday, Congressman Landsman participated in a press conference with the bill’s sponsors, Congresswoman Abigail Spanberger and Congressman Garret Graves, to highlight the momentum of the discharge petition. They were joined by representatives of retired police officers, firefighters, letter carriers, government employees, and educators from across the nation.

Later Thursday, the discharge petition reached 218 signatures, enough to force a vote.

“We’re forcing a vote on the Social Security Fairness Act,” said Congressman Landsman. “It’s the most cosponsored, bipartisan bill in the 118th Congress and it will help millions of retired teachers, police officers, and firefighters. We will get this done.”

Background:

The Social Security Fairness Act is commonsense, bipartisan legislation that has been cosponsored by 327 members of the House and would repeal two Social Security provisions – the Windfall Elimination Provision and the Government Pension Offset – which unfairly penalizes public employees who paid into public retirement pensions but who also worked in the private sector and paid into Social Security.

The Social Security Fairness Act would ensure that the more than two million public retirees whose Social Security benefits are currently reduced by these two provisions would receive the full Social Security benefits they are owed.
